To have her present in this campaign was a necessity, but not continuing to explore her relationship with Calus is such a huge missed opportunity. The previous Season of the Haunted explored her deep connected trauma with Calus, her struggles with him as a ruler and a father, and how he shaped her as a person and as a leader. She’s present for some good moments (no spoilers), but the campaign seriously lacks any level of emotional stakes with her, which is a shame. With the primary antagonist being her father, former Emperor Calus, her presence is practically a requirement. ![]() ![]() The final ally involved, though not nearly to the degree she should have been, is Empress Caiatl. They really sap the tension from what should have felt like an apocalyptic planetary invasion, rather than simply being a tonal counterbalance. They're too jovial and ‘cowabunga-y’ for being one of two defenders of their entire culture - and for being our primary Neomuna NPC. Together, the pair make up the familiar trope of the grizzled vet training the younger, less series rookie, but Nimbus didn’t land for me at all. On the other hand, Nimbus, the younger Cloudstrider, is a bit too cocky, too casual, and honestly, they come across as just plain dumb at times. Unfortunately, he’s severely underused for how narratively valuable he could have been - for you, for Osiris, and for Neomuna in general. Great voice acting, cool look, and more appropriately serious about fending off the threat of Calus’ invasion. Rohan is admittedly pretty solid all around. Two other main characters in the Expansion are Rohan and Nimbus, the two Cloudstriders - defenders of Neomuna. This becomes especially frustrating when he’s yelling at you about the Veil, which again, we know nothing about, making it extremely hard to grow attached to the story. His frustration and anger levels are cranked up several notches higher than usual, making him a bit of an annoying chore during the campaign missions, as he is constantly yelling at you about wasting time. Osiris, who has been embedded in the seasonal storylines for quite some time, feels mishandled here. When players pick up this expansion later, after the seasons have come and gone, they’ll just be left with an incomplete narrative with none of the eventual explanations built into the seasonal storylines that offer necessary context.Īs far as the main characters go? They’re a mixed bag. It’s clear that Bungie intends to explore these answers in the seasons ahead, but it feels cheap to provide information like this piecemeal when it’s so integral to the expansion itself. It's far too reminiscent of Bungie's struggles with Destiny's original story back in 2014. There comes a point toward the end of the campaign where it feels like you’re propelling toward the answers to all the questions built up over the expansion, but shortly after that, the campaign ends, leaving you with even more unanswered questions for the pile. No detail is really offered as to what it is or why it’s important only that we must stop Calus’ forces from reaching it. The only problem is the MacGuffin is never explained. What ensues is a fairly straightforward ‘chase the MacGuffin’ kind of narrative. In the wake of the Witness’ arrival at Earth, your Guardian and Osiris stow onboard Calus’ fleet to stop them from acquiring/using the Veil on the until now hidden city of Neomuna on Neptune. Instead, the narrative of Lightfall feels mostly inconsequential, and the developments that are meaningful are left completely unexplained, sapping them of their weight. The opening cinematic is awesome, setting the stage for what should have been an incredible and dark story. The expansion opens in a big way, with the Witness and his pyramid fleet arriving at Earth. ![]() Narratively, Lightfall was an unfortunate disappointment for me. Needless to say, the expansion leaves a lot to be desired when you consider what was advertised. In fact, it feels overall more like filler than the next big event in the Destiny universe. For all the hype riding into Lightfall’s release, the storyline ends with more questions than answers. This penultimate expansion to the Light and Dark saga promises destruction and devastation, a beautifully neon-lit city on Neptune, and a brand-new Darkness subclass: Strand.
